The Dragon’s blood tree (Harungana madagascariensis) is common in western Kenya, where it is known locally as musira or musaiyes. The tree is native to Kakamega and is revered by the Luhya community. Often found on the forest edge and growing close to Mutere trees, this is a 'pioneer' tree - one of the first to grow back when an area has been disturbed.
It gets its name from the bright red orange sap that “bleeds” from the bark when it is damaged. This sap gives a clue to its traditional medicinal uses. It has long been used to treat blood-related conditions and to help heal wounds.
You can recognise the Dragon tree by its young leaves, which are a rusty red, as well as its small white flowers and clusters of round yellow fruit.
